My '02 is sluggish into 5th--new bike. I've messed with automotive gearboxes--currently don't know much about the Savage. Sometimes the higher gears rotating internal components turn slower and don't drop in as easy--synchronizers, blocking rings--or whatever's in there. Try NOT shifting into 5th until around 50 mph. ....Krug
